With the format of matches for the next eleven games changed to win, lose or draw, Berkswell recorded a winning draw against neighbours Dorridge and moved 27 points clear at the top of the league after the first match of the new format.
Batting first, Berkswell’s top order batsmen made major contributions to the side’s largest total so far this season. Openers Ateeq Javid (51) and Danial Chaudhry (76) added 109 for the first wicket, but unfortunately Chris Whittock (0) was bowled by David Ball only four runs later, however, Nick James (62) and Tom Lewis (58) helped to push the score past 250. A late burst of runs from Tom Milnes (27) and skipper Dominic Ostler (14 not out) enabled Berkswell to close the innings on 306 for 7 after 55 overs.
Chasing such a large total, the Dorridge reply started cautiously and opener Arib Khan (15) was caught at slip by Chris Whittock in only the 6th over. Having lost Edward Thompson (11), Siddesh Dixit (28), and Gary Hawkins (47) the visitors were 145 for 4 by the 35th over. By the 39th over it was 160 for 5, and in the 43rd 174 for 6. However, a resolute innings from skipper David Ball (108 not out) held the innings together and with Luke James (28) he saw Dorridge through to the end of the match.
On Saturday, Berkswell travel to Kenilworth Wardens to play the side currently bottom of the table. The match starts at midday.
