On Sunday, Berkswell travelled to Kegworth Town to participate in the Regional Semi-Final and Final of the Vitality National Club T20 Trophy competition. In their semi-final Berkswell were drawn against Home Counties T20 Champions Banbury CC. Banbury won the toss and elected to bat first but it soon proved to be a disastrous decision. The Home Counties side were completely destroyed by Berkswell’s bowlers and the game was effectively over by the 10th over when they had been reduced to 24 for 8. A battling 18 from David Whiteley and a brisk 31 from Oliver Wright meant a slight recovery, but Banbury were finally all out for 75 in the 20th over, with David Brignull claiming 3 for 14; Tom Milnes 2 for 4, Nick James 2 for 25; and Ateeq Javid 1 for 15.
In their reply, Berkswell lost Nick Bland (5), Chris Whittock (0), Nick James (2) and Tom Milnes (4), in the run chase, but Javid (48 no) and Danial Chaudhry (18 no) were able to reach the required total in the 13th over.
Berkswell 174/7 v Kegworth Town 99ao
Having won the semi-final against Banbury, Berkswell had to face Kegworth Town CC in the Final. Kegworth won the toss and asked Berkswell to bat first and set a target. Ateeq Javid (6) and Nick Bland (2) were both dismissed with only 16 runs on the scoreboard, but Chris Whittock and Danial Chaudhry added a brisk 48 run partnership before Whittock (20) was dismissed. Chaudhry and Tom Milnes (15) then kept the scorers busy adding another 38 runs before Milnes was out at 102. Chaudhry (60) was dismissed at 118 in the 15th over, Nick James (6) was bowled at 127, and Mohammed Ahmed (7) lost his wicket at 138 in the 18th over. With just two overs left Grant Thornton and skipper Dominic Ostler launched a savage attack on the Kegworth bowlers. Thirteen runs were scored in the 19th over to leave the scoreboard on 150 at the start of the last over. In the final over Ostler (18 no) dispatched the ball in imperious fashion for 4 fours in a row, Thornton (17 no) hit a six and the over added another 24 runs to the total.
Losing a wicket in the first over of their reply was the worst possible start for the home side, but a second wicket partnership of 31 kept Kegworth in the game. However, the loss of the second wicket at 47 was closely followed by the third at 53. At 71 the 4th wicket fell, and the 5th at 84. With Javid and James now in control with the ball the Kegworth scoring rate fell away and the wickets continued to fall regularly. The 6th wicket was lost at 92, the 7th at 94, and the 8th at 97. Mohammed Ahmed then cleaned up the final two wickets in two balls and the Kegworth innings closed at 99 all out in the 18th over. Javid finished with figures of 3 for 21; James 2 for 17 and Ahmed 2 for 1. Milnes, Thornton, and Brignull all claimed one wicket each.
Berkswell will now face East Anglian Premier League side Swardeston in the quarter final of the Vitality National Club T20 Trophy competition. Berkswell have been drawn at home and the match will take place on Sunday 18th August.
