Match Report 1st XI Vs Dorridge

Birmingham Premier League Division 1

Dorridge 91/8 v Berkswell 161/6

Berkswell returned from the short trip to Dorridge with another 20 points under their belt and a 76 point lead at the top of the league table.

Arriving at the Dorridge ground in heavy rain to find the wicket wet at one end after rain had seeped under the covers, and a sightscreen blown over, damaged, and unable to be used, did not bode well for the match even taking place, especially as the home side already appear resigned to relegation and were reluctant, with the exception of former skipper David Ball, to even attempt to get the ground ready for play.

However, after a long delay, the umpires deemed the ground conditions had improved sufficiently enough for a 20 overs per side match to take place, and a start was made at half past four. Losing the toss, Berkswell were invited to have first use of the wicket and after the first four overs were precariously positioned at 12 for 3, with Ateeq Javid (1), Nick Bland (4), and Chris Whittock (3) all back in the pavilion.

Dan Chaudhry and Tom Lewis, however, halted the loss of quick wickets and started to cope with the vagaries of the track. With powerful strokes from both batsmen the pairing added another 35 runs in 5 overs until the partnership was broken with the wicket of Chaudhry (27). Tom Milnes replaced Chaudhry in the middle and he and Lewis took full advantage of the, by now, ineffective bowling. With Lewis leading the way the duo added another 56 runs in 6 overs before Milnes (13) was dismissed. In the 16th over, Lewis was the next to depart with the scoreboard now showing 122, and his innings of 60, from just 37 balls, contained 5 sixes, and 3 fours. The last three overs added another 39 runs from Nick James (23 no) and Mohammed Ahmed (11 no) and at the end of the 20th over Berkswell had reached 161 for the loss of 6 wickets.

In their reply, the home side’s batsmen never came to terms with the quality of the Berkswell bowling attack, and regularly lost wickets. Tom Milnes and David Brignull accounted for Mark Swanick (8), Gary Hawkins (8), and David Ball (5) leaving the hosts on 26 for 3 by the 6th over, and then Javid, Jones, and Ahmed removed Dixit (14), Ed Thompson (6), Arib Khan (18), Joe Dodd (12), and Fahad Sabir (1) to leave Dorridge on 91 for 8 at the end of their allotted overs. The Berkswell bowlers returned figures of: Milnes 2 for 16; Brignull 1 for 13; James 2 for 20; Ahmed 2 for 9; and Javid 1 for 19.

On Saturday, Berkswell return to Meeting House Lane to face Kenilworth Wardens who currently reside at the foot of the table. The match starts at 12 noon.
