Berkswell 132ao   v   Swardeston 137/7

The much anticipated contest at Meeting House Lane between Berkswell and Swardeston in the quarter-final of the Vitality National Club T20 competition ended in a narrow victory for the Norfolk based visitors.

Batting first against a side that has past experience of reaching the semi-finals and final of the competition, Berkswell made a brisk start with Ateeq Javid in aggressive mood and after four overs the scoreboard was showing 31 runs. However, at 36, Nick Bland (5) was caught by Joe Gatting and his dismissal

started a regular loss of wickets of Berkswell’s strong top order.  Chris Whittock (4), Danial Chaudhry (5), Javid (30), and Tom Lewis (7) were all back in the pavilion for the addition of only another 36 runs and with only 8 overs remaining. Richard Jones (30), and Nick James (19) were able to raise the score to 121, but their dismissals together with those of Thomas Milnes (3) Dominic Ostler (2), and Stephen Parker (0) meant the innings closed in the 19th over at 132.

Defending a low total required the home side to make early inroads into the visitor’s batting line up, and this they duly did with Milnes and Jones reducing them to 14 for 4 by only the 4th over. However, an 81 run partnership between Peter Lambert and Lewis Denmark swung the match back in favour of the visitor. The losses of Denmark (36), Freddie Ruffell (5), and Richard Sims (2) gave Berkswell some hope of a victory, but an unbroken 8th wicket partnership between Lambert (58 no) and Alfie Cooper (19 no), was enough to see Swardeston through to a place in the semi-finals of the National Club T20.
